The Denver Broncos should look to replace several veteran players via the 2021 NFL Draft.
The Denver Broncos have been stuck in the realm of mediocrity for the past five years. Not being able to identify a true franchise quarterback has played a big part in that.
Now the team is in an offseason that is difficult for the entire NFL. Tough cuts are being made to get under the salary cap and that turns the attention toward getting younger, cheaper talent via the 2021 NFL Draft.
One position to start with may be one fans aren’t even thinking about.
3 veterans for the Broncos to replace via the NFL Draft
3. Sam Martin
Let’s talk about the punter.
Sam Martin joined the Broncos in 2020 on a three-year deal worth just over $7 million. The team can now save $1.8 million by letting him go before June 1. Replacing Martin isn’t a top need in town. But it is a minor change that could free up some money if needed.
Drafting a punter in the seventh round is one option, with the other being an open competition among undrafted players. Fans would obviously prefer the latter, but drafting a talented punter late is not a terrible idea if the player has proven themself in college. Most of the later rounds are risky anyway, so finding a gem at any position is worth the risk.
Expect the Broncos to focus on much more notable players to save money. But don’t be shocked if Martin could be let go in favor of a younger, cheaper player.
