Jaron Ennis passed another test tonight in a Showtime main event, knocking out Sergey Lipinets in the sixth round to take another step toward a possible welterweight title fight.
Ennis (27-0, 25 KO) didn’t really have much more trouble with Lipinets (16-2-1, 12 KO) than he’s had with anyone else, though he did get hit some by the Russian veteran and former 140 lb titlist.
Ennis scored a knockdown in the fourth round, but replays showed it really was more of a trip from Lipinets. But realistically, Lipinets just couldn’t dent Ennis; even when he landed some decent shots in close, Ennis was just too much bigger, and he was also able to fire back harder, faster shots in return.
Not questionable at all was the finish, a wicked KO shot that finished things at 2:11 of the sixth round, which you can see below.
Ennis was his usual pretty soft-spoken self post-fight, but he continues to be adamant — without making big, grand call-outs — that he’s ready for the top guys at 147.
“It was just me seeing openings, and he wasn’t really as good on the inside as me, so I started getting closer and looking for my big shot. I found it,” Ennis said. “One of the (top names) might want to give me a fight. We’ll see. But I think I’m ready for a top five, top three guy.”
