I think it’s a matter of targets and defining success, really.
He’s obviously not going to win the title, so as he says wins and outperforming Hamilton has to be the valid target.
Mark Hughes put it well pre-season that he understood Bottas had been told he basically had to suddenly be the clearly better driver than Hamilton (!) to the team, to save him from Russell.
Russell’s coming, and the question (…) is who he replaces.
So I think Bottas must know he’s done, and probably won’t be champion, but at the end of the day he’s had the same machinery as Hamilton, so is perhaps the one guy in the field who can clearly say he had the opportunity.
