Vietnam vs Australia Preview

The Socceroos started their third round of World Cup qualifying with a win and now travel to steamy Hanoi for a matchup with Vietnam

Australia top the six nations in Group B after their 3-0 win over China, while Vietnam sit in 5th following their 3-1 loss away to Saudi Arabia.

Technically these two countries have never played each other, although the Socceroos did beat South Vietnam in 1967 and 1972 , both by 1-0 scores.

The 1972 contest was a friendly and the 1967 match part of what was known as the Vietnam National Day tournament. It was an incredible adventure – set against the backdrop of the Vietnam war – and an historical moment, the first time the Socceroos won a tournament.

Things will be a bit calmer this time around, especially since COVID protocols mean there won’t be any fans in the stands.

Vietnam are ranked 92nd in the world and are appearing in the third stage of World Cup qualifying for the first time. All of their players besides keeper Dang Van Lam (Japan’s Cerezo Osaka) play in the Vietnamese league.

Graham Arnold could be forced into a change up front, with Martin Boyle nursing a slight hamstring tweak.

The temperature is expected to be in the 30’s with high humidity which would seem to favour the home team if the Socceroos don’t score early.
