Avram Glazer claims Man Utd owners have ‘always spent money’ to improve squad

Manchester United owner Avram Glazer has claimed his family have ‘always spent money’ to improve the playing squad during their time at the club.

The Glazers’ ownership has been controversial since its beginnings in the 2000s. The family gained majority control at Old Trafford via a ‘leveraged buyout’, with most of the money required coming from loans that the club then had to pay off with interest.

Since then it is estimated that the Glazers have taken out around £1bn from United’s coffers, much to supporters’ continued frustration.

Their ownership has also coincided with decreasing success, particularly in recent years, and this process continued this season. United recorded their lowest ever Premier League points tally this campaign and only narrowly missed out on dropping into the Europa Conference League next term.

The Glazers rarely speak to fans publicly but Avram did give an impromptu update on the club’s fortunes while attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

“I don’t think it’s the time to talk about that,” Glazer initially replied when asked about United’s campaign by Sky Sports News reporter Paulo Kelso.

However, Glazer eventually acquiesced to the interview.

“It is a disappointing season, a disappointing season for everyone and we’re going to work hard to make next season better.”

Asked whether he had faith in new manager Erik ten Hag to turn United’s fortunes around, he responded: “That’s why we hired him. We think he’ll do a great job.”

Finally, Glazer was asked about the club’s potential summer spending, adding: “We’ve always spent the money necessary to buy new players.”
