Cam Akers Wants To Be A Top-Three Running Back In NFL

After an unfortunate Achilles tear that cost him most of the 2021 season, Cam Akers was somehow able to make his return late in the year to help the Los Angeles Rams win Super Bowl LVI.

Akers came into the year looking to build off the strong finish to his rookie year, but the injury derailed any chances of that happening. However, upon his return, he flashed the same burst and elusiveness that the Rams were counting on when they took him in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Heading into Year 3, Akers is poised to have a breakout year now that he is healthy and playing with an electric offense. However, he understands that he needs to continue to work at it, which is why he has not taken much time off, via Cameron DaSilva of USA Today:

“This offseason, I really wanted to focus on being more consistent. Going out every play, every snap and just making sure I put myself in the best position to be successful,” he said. “No vacations. Only one trip home. That’s probably the only time I left L.A. I’ve been here every day working and they can attest to it. 8 o’clock in the morning every day.”

Akers is already well-regarded around the league, but he emphasized that he would not be satisfied until he is being talked about as one of the best backs in the NFL:

“Win first, and I do my part second and I’ll be happy,” Akers said when asked what has to happen for him to feel good about the season. “Until y’all can mention me with the top three running backs in the league, outside of winning, I won’t be happy.”

That kind of mentality is going to take Akers places, and it is only to the Rams’ benefit. With another year of experience under his belt, Akers will definitely be a player to watch out for during the 2022 season.
